Even the moisture in the air can sometimes be enough to cause unseen damage to your hearing aids. If you use a wet cloth for cleaning your hearing aids, there is a much greater risk. Ensure that the cloth that you use for cleaning them is soft and dry.
It also goes without saying that before going for a shower, a swim, or while using a hair dryer or hair spray, you must take off your hearing aids.
Due to use of hearing aids for a long time, there could be accumulated earwax and debris which can lead to muffling of sounds. Even pocket lint and dust may accumulate if you place them in your pant pockets or in the open. To prevent this, you should check the earmold opening every morning and also keep it as clean as possible. Also, you should also train yourself to change your earwax guards (you will be required to do this every month).
In most cases, your hearing aid will outlive its battery. Therefore, you should regularly test it to confirm if it is working at the optimal level. If not, you may not be able to have the necessary hearing correction from your hearing aid. If that is the case, you should replace the battery.
Following from the above point, since we know that the hearing aid battery has a lesser lifespan than the hearing aid itself, you should try to maximize its usability by switching off the hearing aid when you are not using it. This will avoid battery wastage when you aren’t wearing them, particularly while going off to sleep at night.
Keep your hearing aids in a cool, dry place before sleeping (preferably in a dry-aid kit). You may also store them in the hearing aid case. Also, keep the battery compartment open when you take your hearing aids off before sleeping. Along with preventing moisture, doing this also preserves the battery as well as the internal electronic circuitry of your hearing aids.
The hearing aid has a plastic tubing which disintegrates gradually with usage. Make sure to replace it when it goes bad to ensure optimal hearing experience.
To ensure that your hearing aids provide the best hearing experience, you must replace old batteries once they run out. Trying to repeat old batteries may result in sub-optimal sound hearing.
Remember that after you remove the tab, wait for around 5-7 minutes before inserting the battery into the hearing aid. This allows the air to activate the battery properly, consequently increasing its lift by ~3 days.
You need to perform in-home cleaning of your hearing aids every 1-2 weeks; however, after every 4-6 months, it is essential that you should get them cleaned and checked by an audiologist to ensure effective hearing experience.
Adhering to the above 9 points will ensure that your hearing aids serve you for the maximum amount of time while also guaranteeing the right hearing experience.
