Things you must know about Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

By Soundrich Hearing

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a type of hearing loss that occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to loud noises. It is a common problem, with millions of people worldwide suffering from NIHL. It can affect people of all ages, but is most common in those who work in noisy environments or who engage in loud leisure activities, such as attending concerts or sporting events.

Causes of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

NIHL is caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, which are responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. When these hair cells are damaged or destroyed, the brain is no longer able to receive and interpret sound properly, leading to hearing loss.

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of NIHL, including:

  • The intensity of the noise: The louder the noise, the greater the risk of NIHL.
  • The duration of the noise: The longer an individual is exposed to loud noises, the greater the risk of NIHL.
  • The individual’s distance from the source of the noise: Being closer to the source of a loud noise increases the risk of NIHL.
  • The frequency of the noise: Some frequencies of noise are more harmful to hearing than others.
  • The individual’s age: As we age, we are more susceptible to hearing loss, including NIHL.
  • The individual’s overall health: Certain health conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, can increase the risk of NIHL.
  • The individual’s genetics: Some people may be more susceptible to NIHL due to genetic factors.
  • The individual’s use of certain medications: Some medications, such as certain antibiotics and chemotherapies, can increase the risk of NIHL.

Common Symptoms of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

NIHL begins to manifest itself gradually over a period of time, and the following are signs to watch out for:

  • Difficulty hearing conversations when multiple people are talking together or when the person is talking softly or quickly, especially in noisy environments
  • A ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Experiencing the need to turn up the TV or radio volume
  • A feeling of fullness in the ears.

In severe cases, NIHL can also cause difficulty hearing the phone ring or other sounds in the environment as well as balance problems.

Prevention of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

NIHL is a permanent condition that cannot be reversed, and so, as is the case with all other health issues, prevention is better than a cure (especially a non-existent one). Here are some ways to prevent NIHL:

  • Wear earplugs or other hearing protection such as noise-canceling headphones when working in a noisy environment or engaging in loud leisure activities, such as concerts or sporting events.
  • Limit your exposure to loud noises. Avoid attending loud concerts or sporting events, or limit the amount of time you spend at these events.
  • Use earplugs or headphones when using loud machinery or equipment.
  • Take regular breaks from loud environments.
  • Keep the volume down on your headphones or speakers.
  • Get your hearing checked regularly, especially if you work in a noisy environment or engage in loud leisure activities.

By taking these precautions, you can help protect your hearing and reduce your risk of developing NIHL.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common problem that can affect people in all professions, but some professions are more likely to be at risk due to the nature of the work. Some professions that are at higher risk for NIHL include:

  1. Construction workers: The loud noises associated with construction work, such as power tools and heavy machinery, can increase the risk of NIHL.
  2. Manufacturing workers: The shop-floor environment can be extremely noisy with loud sounds of machines which can gradually lead to NIHL.
  3. Military personnel: Military servicemen often have to operate in extremely noisy environments with loud and frequent sounds of gunfire and explosions, which can increase the risk of NIHL.
  4. Musicians: Musicians may be at risk for NIHL due to the loud noises associated with playing music, as well as the loud noises at concerts and other events.
  5. Transportation workers: Sounds such as aircraft noise and truck engine noise can be very loud, thereby increasing the risk of NIHL.
  6. Farmers: Farming may occasionally involve exposure to loud noises such as tractor noise and livestock noises, which may increase the risk of NIHL.
  7. Miners: The loud noises associated with mining, such as drilling and blasting, can lead to NIHL among people working in the mines.

It is important for individuals in these professions to be aware of the risks of NIHL and to take steps to protect their hearing

Treatment Options for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

As mentioned before, NIHL is a permanent condition. Therefore, there is nothing that you can do for curing it. Treatment options majorly revolve around helping people with the condition to manage it and minimize the issues they might encounter due to the condition in their daily lives. The following are various such options that one can explore if they have been diagnosed with NIHL:

  1. Hearing aids: Hearing aids can help amplify sounds and make it easier to understand speech and other sounds.
  2. Cochlear implants: Cochlear implants can help improve hearing to a considerable extent for someone suffering from NIHL.
  3. Assistive listening devices: Assistive listening devices, such as personal amplification devices, can help amplify sounds and make it easier to hear in noisy environments.

The best treatment option for NIHL will depend on the severity of the hearing loss, the individual’s unique situation, and their preferences. If you have any of the symptoms of NIHL, it is essential that you promptly seek the advice of a healthcare professional to identify the most appropriate intervention plan.
