When Do You Need a Hearing Aid? Understanding Levels of Hearing Loss

By Soundrich Hearing

If you’ve noticed that conversations are becoming harder to follow, especially in noisy environments, you might be wondering: What level of hearing loss requires a hearing aid? The answer depends on the degree of hearing loss and how much it affects your daily life.

Early treatment is key—not only for clearer communication but also for protecting your brain health and maintaining social connections. Let’s break down the different hearing loss levels and when hearing aids are recommended.

Understanding Hearing Loss Levels

A hearing test, called an audiogram, measures the quietest sounds you can hear at different pitches. The results are categorized into these levels of hearing loss:

  • Normal hearing: -10 to 20 dB

  • Mild hearing loss: 21 to 40 dB

  • Moderate hearing loss: 41 to 55 dB

  • Moderately severe hearing loss: 56 to 70 dB

  • Severe hearing loss: 71 to 90 dB

  • Profound hearing loss: 91 dB and above

Each level has different effects on your ability to understand speech and interact with the world around you.

Mild Hearing Loss – Do You Need a Hearing Aid Yet?

With mild hearing loss (21–40 dB), you may still hear most sounds, but soft speech and background noise can make conversations difficult. Common signs include:

  • Asking people to repeat themselves

  • Struggling in restaurants or group settings

  • Turning the TV up louder than others prefer

While some people wait before getting help, many audiologists recommend hearing aids even at this stage. Early use helps prevent listening fatigue and reduces the risk of social withdrawal.

Moderate Hearing Loss – The Most Common Time to Get Hearing Aids

When hearing loss reaches the moderate range (41–55 dB), understanding speech becomes much harder. At this point, most people notice that communication problems affect work, family life, and daily activities.

Signs you may need a hearing aid include:

  • Missing words during phone calls

  • Difficulty following conversations, even in quiet rooms

  • Frequently misunderstanding what others say

This is the level where hearing aids are strongly recommended, since untreated hearing loss can quickly impact quality of life.

Severe Hearing Loss – Hearing Aids Are Essential

With moderately severe to severe hearing loss (56–90 dB), normal conversation is often inaudible without amplification. At this stage, hearing aids are not optional—they are essential for communication.

Modern hearing aids can:

  • Amplify speech sounds

  • Reduce background noise

  • Connect wirelessly to phones and TVs for easier listening

Without them, following conversations becomes nearly impossible, even in quiet settings.

Profound Hearing Loss – Beyond Standard Hearing Aids

For profound hearing loss (91 dB and above), even the loudest everyday sounds may be difficult to detect. While powerful hearing aids may help, many people benefit more from cochlear implants or advanced assistive devices.

If you have profound hearing loss, an audiologist or ENT specialist can guide you toward the best treatment option.

Other Factors That Influence When to Get Hearing Aids

It’s not just about the decibel number on your hearing test. The decision to get hearing aids also depends on:

  • Speech clarity – If you hear sounds but can’t understand words, amplification helps.

  • Lifestyle – People in social or professional environments often need hearing aids sooner.

  • Both ears vs. one ear – Hearing aids in both ears provide better balance and speech clarity.

  • Personal goals – If you want to stay active, engaged, and connected, hearing aids are a smart choice.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait Too Long

Many people delay treatment, but research shows that early use of hearing aids has major benefits:

  • Maintains brain health and reduces dementia risk

  • Improves relationships and social confidence

  • Reduces stress, frustration, and fatigue

  • Keeps you independent and engaged in daily activities

Think of hearing aids like glasses—you wouldn’t wait until your vision is nearly gone to correct it.

Conclusion: What Level of Hearing Loss Requires a Hearing Aid?

  • Mild hearing loss – Consider hearing aids if communication feels tiring.

  • Moderate hearing loss – Hearing aids are usually necessary for clear communication.

  • Severe or profound hearing loss – Hearing aids (or cochlear implants) are essential.

The best way to know for sure is to schedule a hearing test with an audiologist. If you’re struggling to keep up with conversations, that’s already a strong sign that hearing aids could make your life easier.
